Martino Occhi – Step by Step

Mount Meru is the second highest peak in Tanzania, the fifth highest in Africa and a spectacular dormant volcano a few steps from Kilimanjaro. The Momella Route is the only way to climb the mountain.

The second highest peak in Tanzania is located at the Arusha region, in the center of the Arusha National Park, a few kilometers from the town, famous by the coffee plantations and the people who live there: the Maasai.
The volcano, with 4.566 m, covered largely by forests and green plains, is a paradise for many species of animals, especially elephants, buffaloes, leopards, monkeys and more than 400 species of birds. The last eruption, of little relevance, took place in 1910. The amount of volcanic craters in the vicinity of Mount Meru suggest that the volcano has known several explosions in the past, indeed some surveys suggest that it had been even higher than Kilimanjaro.

The volcano was first climbed by Fritz Jäger in 1904.
